Hi, I have an Epson (3490) scanner utility that's currently loaded into
WinXp. The utility is "Epson Copy Utility 3". I am trying to uninstall
then reinstall it due to a launching problem. I tried to remove it via the
Add/Remove programs feature in Control Panel. But a message returns with
"Installshield setup launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close".
I have tried deleting any references to any Epson products in program files
and gone into Regedit and deleted any entries, but still no luck at removing
the reference to the Copy Utility in Add/Remove program feature. Accessing
through Safe Mode doesn't help or reinstalling on top of the earlier copy
then trying to uninstall it ..it's still in the system, it's still listed
in the A/R window. As well the Installshield website gives no help or
reference to this error message.

Any further suggestions appreciated.

TweekUI will remove the entry from the Add/Remove list. TweekUI will not
actually remove the program, just the entry in Add/Remove.

Click on PowerToys for Windows XP.

All very well and good, thanks. I have TweakUI and will use it. But first,
how do I actually get the dumb thing (copy util) off the system in order to
have another go at installing it?

Sometimes it is advisable to try things in safe mode. I have just
woken up so I can't even begin to recall how the hell to get into safe
mode, but that should only load the very basics of the system and make
it easier for you to remove the program... oh yeah, here's a little
'how to' from a website

To use the F8 key to start Windows XP in Safe mode
Restart the computer.

As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.

Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press
Enter.

In addition to Paul's very good go to Safe mode.

It is always a good idea to backup the registry before making any changes.

Without the uninstall utility, you delete the files in the program folder
for Epson Copy utility (I don't know the name) I don't have Epson Copy
Utility. Then you search the registry for the entries for Epson Copy Utility
and delete them.

Once the registry is clear of Epson Copy Utility, you should be able to
normally install a good copy.

You get to the registry editor by Run>regedit<Enter>. You type regedit in
the Run box.

Ok guys, thanks for the input. But please reread my original post. I've
done the things you suggested with no satisfactory results. What I need to
do now is to remove the entry in the A/R window feature. It still shows
Epson Copy Utility 3 at 1.1 mb. TweatUI didn't seem to remove the entry
either. Jack

Have you done a registry search for "Epson Copy" without quotes?
If you find that string in the registry, then delete the entry.

You will likely find it in more that one place.

It has to be in the registry somewhere, else It would not show in the list.
Does your Windows do a populate the add/remove list when you first go into
Add/remove?

around on the Newsoft site. I believe they write the program for Epson.

I forgot to mention, take a look at the patch on item 4 of this page. From
this webpage, "4. Click Here to download a patch for Smart Panel v3.0.
Uncompress the patch and install it. The program can remove all data from
system registry."

Last time I found myself in this situation, I re-installed it first,
the somewhat backward logic being that if it can't be uninstalled,
it's because the installation is damaged - so re-installing will
correct the damage and allow it to be uninstalled ... it's always
worked for me so far.

Thanks, guys.
Jimmy.. your info is a good start and I'll bookmark the site for any future
troubleshooting. In the meanwhile I found this:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/AddRemove.htm
which works well. I no longer have the reference in the A/R programs
window.
The scanner progs seem to load well now but am still having a problem
reloading after using another standalone, Proshow slideshow maker ;^/ I
have to uninstall the scanner drivers then reinstall in order to use the
device.
