I want to scan my 2000 page German dictionary to jpgs because it is the
most versitile computer image across all operating systems etc. - and I
can store the dictionary in jpg pages on a usb memory stick.

I initially started digitally photographing each page to a jpg but it is
very slow and tedious.

I have available a scanner that changes scanned pages to pdf. How can I
convert from pdf to jpg easily? I run linux so there may be software
there that converts -- but the scanner runs under my xp?

It is going to be a slow process anyway but I thought a camera is the
last option I should use.

The humour, of course, is that most computers weigh as much as my German
dictionary, but in the long run laptops are getting smaller and
lighter! Carrying the computer and dictionary is too much.

Buying an electronic dictionary is not an option as they do weird things
to dicitionaries when they go digital and they are less complete
obviously limited by search methods. A jpg page image is perfect!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on the matter.

If you are scanning the pages, why not save the scans as jpg, you should
have an option of the image format in File > Save As in your Photo software.

Use the Scanner's TWAIN interface in a photo editor.
Since you are using Linux, you have Gimp available (it is free and Photoshop
like).

There are German-English dictionaries online.
Search Google for German Dictionary on line, you will get many choices.
