I just attempted to scan a series of landscape photos from a calendar.

I am using an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner with resolution set at
600.

What I produced were pictures that can best be described as looking like
they were printed on the side of a coarse burlap bag.

Is this a scanner problem? Is it a wrong setting on the software? Is it
a copy protection built into the photo?

There are to my knowledge two possibilities for this effect - one is
that the calends photos have a print matrix which just happens to
produce interference with the 600dpi setting of the scanner - if so, try
another resolution with is not related to the number 600 as example 545
or so. Another effect is that your display (if this is visible on the
display only) interfers with the scan at a certain magnification -
change the magnification on the display and it should not be there
anymore. An other solution - I would be interested to learn about it, so
please let me now what resolved your problem at the end!

Thanks! When I get a little time to play with the scanner I will try a
different resolution. I'm not sure though, whether I can choose a
number like 575. I may only have the choices offered by the scanner,
generally multiples of 100. I'll try. Thanks.
