Getting along in years, and simply don't remember stuff like I used to be
able to. Anyhow, what's the simplest way of taking a bunch of hard copy
documents and getting them into some kind of files I can word process, using
something like Word or MS Works (yes, I've got a flat bed scanner).

You need OCR (optical character recognition) software, which converts a
scanned image to editable text.

If you want to ask further, try comp.periphs.scanners.
