Fax scan problem

Since losing Symantec's Winfax, I am having trouble replacing it with it's
original
counterpart, WinFax Lite. When trying to either scan a document to my fax
modem,
or saving it to disk, WinFax Lite will not accept it. The Epson scanner only
seems to
put out documents of jpg, bit map, etc., but not fax. Somehow the Symantec
Winfax program was able to talk to the scanner and pull in documents as
attachments. I think some fax programs set up dummy printer abilities that will
take
a scanned document and output it as a fax. My two choices are to find a fax
program (preferably freeware) that will do that, or a conversion program that
will
take these image files from the scanner and convert them to a fax format. Any
suggestions?

If your scanner can produce TIFF with CCITT Fax 3 or CCITT Fax 4
compression, your winfax should handle the image.

Or you can install Irfanview, scan the document in Irfanview and save the
image as TIFF, CCITT fax 3 or 4. If you go that way get the plug-in also.

Irfanview is not necessary, but I do need a utility to convert a TIFF file to

a fax compatible file like *.fx* or BFT, which is what my Winfax will accept.

I scoured the web, but only found conversion files going the other way, from
FAX to TIFF.

Not free, but $30 after 14 day trial.

I think it would be easier and cheap to just buy a standalone fax machine.

I bought this Epson RX500 3 in 1 to handle my faxes, as it has for years. I was
using Winfax from Symantec to interface to the fax. I cannot load my Winfax
program anymore, since it seems to be bundled up with the System Works program
on the install disc. I no longer want System Works on my machine. It's hard to
believe there are no conversion programs from TIF to FAX.

This is almost unbelievable! Over a year ago, I tried multiple times and ways to
load
Winfax as a standalone program from my Symantec System Works install disk. I
don't even remember all the different ways it failed. I thought I would try one
more
time to install it and low and behold, it got in. I think that I will be ok now,
unless
Symantec trips me up again.
