Another Epson 1650 & Windows problem

Similar to another thread here, thought maybe someone could help.

I am using a Pro-Star laptop with XP Pro SP1 and 4.3.1. This is a used as a
workstation with Avid XPro, only a year and a half old always offline,
rarely add stuff, etc..

About 3 months ago I had installed my Epson 1650 photo scanner to scan
photos for an edit with no problem. After scanning, I completely
disconnected the scanner (after shut off) and did not use it again with this
computer. In the interim, I installed the updated TWAIN and Copy utility,
just to make sure I had the most recent drivers. Today, after reconnecting
the scanner via USB, Windows did not recognize it and I kept getting the new
hardware wizard. I did the usual shutdown restart bit, but nothing. Then I
uninstalled all epson software, then attempted a correct re-install from
scratch with the CD. Install hung up on Smart Panel, then eventually let go,
but failed. I got a Windows message saying that the software was
incompatable with XP and should not be installed or it may affect windows. I
cancelled installation, and uninstalled the components that had already been
installed. After another try, software installed, but windows wouldn't see
the scanner. Uninstall, reinstall, then get the windows incompatable error.

Checked the epson site, nothing. What really bugs me is that with the
original installation a few months back, worked like a charm.

The only additions of software since the inital scanner installation are a
graphire pad and half a dozen fonts. Doubt that's it. Anyone? Help?

The update removes the scanner entries, it has to be redetected for
the driver to update. So you must complete the wizard. Just set it to
search automatically.
If you don't your scanner will not work as you have not let the OS
load the drivers.
