I finally managed to solve the problem.
First I stopped the Avast! anti-virus and Zone Alarm.
My first attempts to install the drivers was with the software from the CD.
It always stopped at the page where it says to connect the Pixma to the
computer via USB and to the power source. Although I went through the
process four times, each time it stopped there.
I tried four USB cables but all gave the same results. When I switched on
the Pixma a Found New Hardware window opened up and offered help with the
driver. However, that route ended up the same way as all the others
described below.
The Device Mgr could see the Pixma under USB Controllers but it had an
exclamation mark with a yellow blob on it. If I switched off the Pixma the
exclamation mark and blob disappeared and when I switched it back on, they
reappeared. If I rt-clicked the blob, and looked at Properties, a window
opened and told me no driver is installed and invited me to install one. If
I directed the installer to the Canon CD, it searched through it and came up
with nothing. It then went to winnt/inf and pulled out oem20.inf and finally
flopped out saying there was an error.
Next I tried to install at Add/Rem hardware, which reported "This device is
not configured correctly." It then indicated hit Finish to start T'shooting,
which started with Welcome to the Upgrade Driver Wizard. It scanned the CD
and, astonishingly, came up with \drv98me\mp170up.inf [for Windows
2000!!!] and USB Printing Support usbprint.inf. The next time I tried this
route it came up with \drv98me\mp170st.inf. In one attempt, thinking that
the driver might have been misnamed, I allowed it to continue but it bombed
out with "Error .....the driver was not specified for this device instance."
Clever Win2k :-(
The final resolution was to install the USB Printer when the installer
presented two choices - the MP170 or the USB Printer. At last the Pixma now
works fine. So much for the lousy quality installation instructions
provided.
Only one slight side effect of that effort: Although the Pixma works just
fine, Win2k thinks it is a storage device and it doesn't appear in the
Device Mgr any more, and I'm just going to leave well enough alone ;-) The
little joys of Windows <sigh!>
